Black Japanned wood hilt with inlaid hand engraved silver cross. 30” blade decorated over 2/3 its length with crusades scenes, Masonic symbols, foliage, owner’s name, Crusades scene and Knight on gold ground. The gold faded in the field and strong around the figures. The forte with HORSTMANN PHILADELPHIA.  That maker worked from 1843 on providing swords for the Civil War and after. Scabbard excellent with the enamel mounts undamaged, no dents and plating complete. Quality and construction including the decoration consistent with its early manufacture.
